We must be really missing Greek food as we seem to be reading and hearing about it everywhere. We recently visited a friend in Scotland whose aubergines were starting to flourish, and he sent us photos of the moussaka he made from them. It looked so good!
A new cafe with Greek owners has opened in the town where we live, so we’ll have to check that out, and our local Lidl just had its Greek Week, allowing us to stock up on Greek cheeses, dolmades, and other Greek goodies. We already buy Greek yoghourt there every week for our breakfasts.
Where to Eat on Symi
So, let’s keep it going by recommending where to eat on Symi, one of our favourite Greek islands. We’ve been there several times and it’s now definitely time to consider another visit. Perhaps in the autumn after hopefully the current Greek heatwave has subsided.
Our first choice of where to eat on Symi has always been Giorgio’s, at the top of the steps that lead from the harbour to the upper town. Giorgio was such a character, with a tanned and lined face, a chain-smoker, and he loved to play the guitar too. Many a night he would sit himself down at our table, as he did with all his regulars, have a bit of a gossip, maybe play his guitar, and help himself to a few chips. But at the end of the meal, some extra dish or drink would always appear.
One Easter when we were on Symi, we were eating at a cafe by the harbour when one of the Easter processions came by. Everyone jumped up to watch it pass, and some of the people from the procession descended on the cafe. It was getting frantic and we were ready to leave, but the waiter was nowhere to be found. When we did track him down, he was looking harassed at the sudden invasion of new customers. ‘Pay tomorrow!’ he said. So we did. That’s so typical of Greece.
Symi Restaurant Recommendations
So we’ve done a new page on our website of Where to Eat on Symi. Be warned, though, it will have you wanting to pack your bags and book a few tables!
Till next time
