Happy New Year! Or Kalí Chroniá, as they say in Greece.
And let’s start it with one of our favourite topics: Greek food. Specifically in Athens and Piraeus, as the Michelin Guide has just listed its choices as best restaurants in the Greek capital for 2024 and unveiled a new Michelin star.
Michelin Stars
The new star is Makris Athens by Domes, where chef Petros Dimas uses produce from his own organic farm to produce what the Michelin inspectors described as innovative dishes. They have a special vegan menu and do events like olive oil tasting, wine tasting and mixology classes.
Makris is now the 11th restaurant in Athens with one Michelin star, and Athens now has 39 restaurants singled out by Michelin for special status in their various categories, including Green Stars and Bib Gourmands.
Historic Tavernas
If there’s one thing Athens and Piraeus do as well as cutting-edge cuisine it’s old tavernas that have been there forever and serve good basic food at good basic prices, in a cosy atmosphere.
If you want some suggestions then the excellent website/magazine Greece Is has published a list of ten historic tavernas in Athens and Piraeus. Make a note of them for your next Athens visit.
Souvlaki Shops
If you like your souvlaki then the same people have also published a selection of the best souvlaki shops in Athens and Piraeus. One of them, Aigyptiakon, goes back a hundred years, having been established by an Armenian refugee. If you want to know where it is then the page has a map on it too.
And that’s it for this time. Kali Oreksi!
