In October 1987 a writer friend of mine was going to Prague for the weekend, long before it became the top destination it is today. I know the date because we flew out on the day after the Great Storm swept across Britain. I decided to go with him and see what at that time was a mysterious city still occupied by Russia.
I could write an entire post about how we managed to get from my flat in east London to Heathrow, west of London, thanks to a brilliant taxi driver (public transport was down) but this is about Greece not Prague so I won’t. I will include some nice photos of Prague, though.
Suffice it to say that we eventually got to Prague in the evening but were so excited to be there that we immediately went out on a cold night to explore the area around our hotel. Our aimless wanderings took us into the red light district, from which we beat a hasty retreat back to the bar of our hotel.
The point of this little introduction is to say that I love wandering around cities, whether aimlessly or by using a map or a guide, but sometimes it’s better to know where you’re going in case you end up where you don’t want to be.
One of the things we’ve done on Greece Travel Secrets is to include some walks with directions and downloadable maps, so that readers can use them if they want to find some of the highlights in cities and towns they may not know. Here are just some of them.
Athens
In Athens we chose A Walk Around Kolonaki, the ‘posh’ part of Athens that shows you a different side to the city, and very close to the centre. The walk starts and ends at Syntagma Square, and takes you past a few museums that you can also visit, and to Mount Lykabettos.
Corfu
Here we have A Walk Around Old Corfu Town. This is a historic and picturesque part of Corfu Town, but its narrow old streets make it an easy place to get lost in. It’s a good place to have directions printed out as the high houses and narrow streets mean you may lose your phone signal.
Crete
If you’re visiting Crete’s capital, Irakleio, here’s our route for Walking Around Irakleio. It will take you to see the city’s churches, squares, and beautiful buildings.
Rhodes
Rhodes also has an old town that you absolutely have to see, even if you only have a few hours in Rhodes Town. Check out our walk: A Walk in the Old Town of Rhodes.
Ioannina
Ioannina in Epirus isn’t on everyone’s Greece travel radar, but it ought to be. It’s a lovely lakeside city with a fascinating history, and our Ioannina Walk also includes a ferry ride to continue the walk around the delightful island of Nissi in Lake Ioannina.
Symi
Everyone falls for Symi the minute they set eyes on it, coming in on the ferry from Rhodes. And that includes us. Our Symi Town Walk is a good introduction and will help you get your bearings.
And that’s it for now. Thanks for reading and subscribing, and do pass this on to anyone you think might be interested.
Mike
That's cool. Never heard of him until that program.
We're right in the middle of the series, "The Durrells in Corfu" & we recommend it. It's based on their true lives while living there - the family is at the same time amusing & interesting, while also raising some annoyance! I don't want to be ruining it for those who haven't seen it, but I'm not surprised they ended up doing something that's come up in the show a number of times! I do favor the author of the trilogy, in the show. Beautiful scenery, plus lots of palms. I'll have to read the trilogy.
