I recently mentioned the opening of Thessaloniki’s new metro system, and now thanks to the YouTube channel of GreekReporter.com, we can all see what it’s like.
Greece at Christmas
Like everywhere else, Greece is starting to gear up for Christmas. Piraeus had its tree-lighting ceremony on Wednesday, and you can see from this photo that it was quite the event.
That’s the Piraeus Municipal Theatre you can see, covered in 100,000 lights, while the tree itself is 15 meters high and was brought to Piraeus from Halkidiki. Throughout December the theatre will be hosting a series of performances celebrating the spirit of Christmas.
Not to be outdone, here is Athens’ Christmas tree in Syntagma Square.
But what’s the weather like in Athens in December? December is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures ranging from 48°F (9°C) to 57°F (14°C). It's also the wettest month, with an average of 11 rainy days and only 3 hours of daily sunshine. However, the weather is still mild compared to many other European cities during winter. All this is why in a recent survey American holidaymakers chose Athens as one of their top Christmas vacation destinations. And who can blame them?
Till next time
