After last week’s post about the Best Bars in Athens, we thought it a good idea to follow it up with some guidance on opening hours in Greece generally. That was prompted by reading a news story a few days ago saying that the Athens Metro lines 2 and 3 are extending their weekend closing times until 2am.
The Greeks are notorious late-nighters, just like the Spanish, and have traditionally enjoyed partying until the wee small hours (at the earliest). In big cities and busy resorts you’ll find discos and nightclubs that are open till 5am or 6am, and they may not even open their doors till midnight or afterwards.
Shops
In large cities, shops are usually open 9 AM–9 PM, except on Saturdays when they close at 8 PM. In suburban areas, shops are often open from 9 AM–2:30 PM and 5:30 PM–8:30 PM Monday-Saturday. Some shops are closed on Sundays, though not in busy tourist resorts.
Banks
Banks are usually open 8 AM–2:30 PM Monday through Thursday, and 8 AM–2 PM on Friday.
Public administration offices
Public administration offices are open 8 AM–1 PM Monday through Friday.
Museums
These vary enormously, and in any case change regularly, so always check online or by phone before visiting. And we hope you will be visiting Greece soon!
Till next time
