We just posted a new page on the website, where we tried to come up with the Ten Best Dishes in Greece. It was a fun but frustrating task, as it was impossible to narrow the choice down to just ten. What - no stifado, no Greek salad, no taramasalata? Sorry, no, but we do think our list of ten is pretty good.
If you love Greek food and you live anywhere near London, mark your diaries for the weekend of July 19-20 this summer. That’s when the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Food Festival 2025 takes place at the Business Design Centre. The festival showcases food from all around the world, but this year the Greek region of Thessaly will be featured strongly.
It will be a chance to see cooking demonstrations and, of course, to sample the cuisine of Thessaly. It’s more than just that, though, as the food festival will also highlight the cultural side of Thessaly, with its ancient sites, the city of Volos and the wonderful Pelion peninsula.

Record Tourism Numbers
We’ve talked several times about the increase in the number of visitors going to Greece, which is of course good for the economy but not without the down side of overtourism. And now it’s official. Last year saw a record number of 35.9 million tourists visiting Greece. To put this into perspective, in the year 2000 there were 13.1 million visitors.
Walking Paths Expansion
To help you walk off all that food (and to escape the crowds!), Greece is expanding its network of walking paths with no fewer than 107 walking paths being created. The Greek government has set aside 42 million euros for the scheme, though this money will come through the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility. It’s part of the government’s plan to promote sustainable tourism.
Places where new paths will be created include Asterousia in southern Crete, the islands of Kalymnos and Folegandros, as well as places in the Peloponnese, Epirus, and Thessaly regions. The 107 new walks will be spread throughout rural communities on the mainland and the islands.
So, on that good news, we leave you till next time.
