Greece 2026
Tourism still rising
We’ve mentioned in the past that the number of visitors to Greece has been constantly rising since tourism restarted post-COVID. And that increase continues in 2026. In the first four months of the year there were 5.24 million visitor arrivals, which is a whopping 27.1% increase over 2025.
According to the Bank of Greece these visitors generated 2.79 billion euros in revenue for the country. And a lot of that is being reinvested in various improvements that visitors - and Greeks - will appreciate.
New Museum on Chalki
A new archaeological museum has opened on the island of Chalki in the Dodecanese. It’s only a small museum, but then it’s only a small island, and a delightfully quiet one too. The museum is in the main town of Emborio and tells the history and geography of Chalki thanks to finds maid over the years.
Corinth Canal Reopens
The Corinth Canal closed last November after a rockslide. The steep sides of the canal are quite fragile and there have been several rockslides in recent years, resulting in temporary closures. This time the canal was closed for several months while the sides were reinforced, and it reopened on June 17th. Read about Corinth and the Corinth Canal here.
Meanwhile, after 220 years…
For almost as long as we’ve been visiting Athens, the Parthenon has been covered in scaffolding. Our first visits were so long ago that we were able to walk up to the Parthenon, touch the columns, and actually walk inside. Then came the dreaded scaffolding, frustrating photographers.
The reason for the scaffolding was the reconstruction of the western facade, but this summer, for the first time in 220 years, visitors will be able to see the western side as it was meant to be seen. And no more scaffolding!
