This week it was announced that Greece has 625 Blue Flag beaches, the second-highest number in the world. Only Spain has more, of the 52 countries covered. In fact Greece accounts for 15% of the world’s Blue Flag beaches.
If you’re a beach-lover, then you’ll want to think about heading for either Crete, with 146 Blue Flag beaches (more than some countries), or Halkidiki, which has 104 such beaches, ten more than last year.
What Is a Blue Flag Beach?
A Blue Flag beach is a certification given to beaches by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that meet its standards of environmental management. This means the beach has excellent water quality, safety measures in place, and adheres to environmental education programs.
In order to be awarded a Blue Flag, beaches must meet a strict set of criteria, including:
Water quality: The beach must have excellent water quality, which is regularly monitored.
Environmental education: The beach must have programs in place to educate visitors about the importance of protecting the environment.
Safety and services: The beach must have adequate safety measures in place, such as lifeguards and first aid facilities. It must also have clean toilets and changing facilities.
Environmental management: The beach must have a plan in place to manage waste and conserve water and energy.
