Ancient Olympia
Enhanced for Visitors
Improvements at Ancient Olympia have made it an even more magical place to visit than it was already. It was quite an experience to tour the site, home of the original Olympic Games, and see that the original running track still has its starting and finishing lines intact.
Now restoration work has been done by the Greek Culture Ministry on three Roman monuments, and visitors this summer will be the first to appreciate the work that has been undertaken at a cost of 3.5 million euros.
The work also helps show that the site is much more than just the place where the Olympic Games began, and spans centuries of history.
Restoration was undertaken on the Early Christian Basilica, which was built long after the decline of the Olympic Games and shows the spread of Christianity throughout the region.
Also restored was the South Baths Complex, and the Baths of the Leonidaion. The second of these now displays the original mosaics and part of the original heating system.
Work is also ongoing on other places at the site, in anticipation of increased interest prior to the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
